Cows and chickens can be very captive audiences.
I grew up in a small town called Dudley in the middle of Georgia in the 1980’s and 90’s. My parents owned a farm and ran a small business that catered to the community’s farm needs. My two brothers and I helped our parents with farm and business related tasks as we grew up on some of the most beautiful farmland you’ve ever seen.
I guess my upbringing has influenced my work the most. I’ve always loved to imagine scenarios and recreate them on whatever platform available, be it the front porch steps or a giant hay bale. If a song was involved, even better. My mom says it was always fun to wash the dishes because I kept her entertained through the kitchen window. I attribute that interest in growing up on that farm and having a place to explore and imagine. To pretend, to tell a story. Also, cows and chickens can be very captive audiences.
I was fortunate to grow up in community theatre and my high school had a very active thespian troupe, Troupe 669. Our motto was, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way!” and we took it to heart. We were a motley crew of personalities, spontaneous yet determined. We were led by two very special teachers who found that perfect balance of guiding us through our creative pursuits without constricting us to an overly strict framework.
It’s this upbringing that inspired my love of theatre and telling stories, always excited to meet the next motley crew.
